The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is accepting applications from residents for one position on the newly created Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission.
The role of the commission will be to shape how the City engages its residents and works with neighborhood and community organizations, as well as oversee programming details and funding for neighborhood revitalization work. The resident who will be appointed by the MPRB on January 2, 2009 will be part of the 16-member commission. Of the remaining members, eight residents will be selected by neighborhood organizations and seven will be appointed by the Mayor and Council Members of Minneapolis.
The application deadline for the MPRB appointed commission position is December 19, 2008. Applicants are required to be Minneapolis residents who do not hold a current election certificate. We need your help ending homelessness, one person at a time!
Project Homeless Connect is a one-stop shop model for delivering services to people experiencing homelessness. Hennepin County and the City of Minneapolis are partnering with service providers, businesses, citizens, and faith communities to bring multiple resources to one location where people can come to find the services they need. These services include: housing providers, employment specialists, medical care, mental health care, benefits specialists, eye care, haircuts, food, and clothing.
April success
At Project Homeless Connect on April 28, 2008, nearly 1300 volunteers assisted 2,800 individuals in accessing services at the Minneapolis Convention Center. This is a 36% increase in the number of guests from the previous event. 25% reported being homeless for the first time, 14% multiple times homeless, and 22% long-term homeless. 523 singles and 167 families received individualized housing triage with 150 housing applications being completed. 164 received primary medical care and 341 received dental assessments including 24 receiving free dentures. The eye clinic dispensed 340 reading glasses and 60 prescription eyeglasses. 148 enrolled or received information on Adult Basic Education or GED testing. 295 accessed legal services while 425 used the employment services. 281 received help with benefits from veterans' services, Social Security, and community action agencies. 126 youth received information on case management and programs. Nearly 500 received haircuts and 350 obtained state IDs and birth certificates.
1300 volunteers needed for Monday, December 8
I am writing today to ask you to help at the December 8 event. The Convention Center space will be set up with many tables, rooms, and areas for the various services available and volunteers will assist the guests in connecting with the assistance they need or request. With about 2000 participants expected for this event, we need at least 1300 volunteers to make the day successful. Volunteers must be at least 18 years of age.
Volunteer Shifts and Training
The December event will start at 10:30 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. with two shifts for volunteers: (1) 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and (2) 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. All volunteers are asked to arrive by 9:00 a.m.
Training for the December 8 Project Homeless Connect is required for all volunteers except those who trained and volunteered for a previous event. To make the volunteer experience better and to offer the best service to the guests, current training for this event is strongly recommended for returning volunteers. You will receive a reminder of the training shortly before the date you choose.

New NAACP Leader Kicks-Off Tenure Registering Every Last Voter

BALTIMORE, MD ––While most kids were home playing Nintendo, 14-year old Benjamin Todd Jealous and his friends were out commanding card tables and conducting voter registration drives. After registering thousands of new voters, Jealous realized the power of community organizing. Now, twenty–one years later, he is combining his organizing skills -- honed as a youth by the NAACP -- with emerging technologies to transform the organization that he now leads. As the youngest President in the NAACP’s nearly 100-year history, and a fifth-generation NAACP member, Jealous starts his tenure doing what he does best. Getting people involved. “As an organization, our goal is to make the promise of this country real for all families,” said Jealous, “and this starts with making all Americans regular voters.
While unprecedented numbers of African Americans and young people are expected to register in this year’s election, Jealous’ aspirations are higher. “The NAACP has had a history of transforming this country and in that tradition, we will transform the electoral process. We can do it by registering every last voter, verifying every last voter, mobilizing every last voter, protecting every last voter and ensuring that every last vote is counted,” said Jealous.
This week, Jealous started his first day on the job rolling out a new online voter registration initiative, Upload to Uplift. This initiative uses Web 2.0 technology to encourage visitors to register and upload the email addresses of family and friends that are not registered. Upload to Uplift also uses a text message feature to remind registered voters to go to the polls on Election Day. “Online voter registration is a natural extension of the NAACP voter empowerment programs,” said Jealous. “While we will continue to do employ successful strategies, like door-to-door canvassing and phone banking, however, this tool adds the power of viral voter registration to our mix.” he added.
Many of the 1200 active NAACP units have tested the site anticipating its ability to expand their existing voter registration efforts. “Our branches and our Youth and College units, are excited about using this emerging technology to reach a new and very active core of activists – both online and offline, said Nelson B. Rivers III, Chief of NAACP Field Operations.
The NAACP is calling on all corporate, community partners, bloggers and individuals with web sites to download the widget onto their Web sites. “By making the tool available to partners to place on their sites, the NAACP aims to reach the millions of remaining unregistered African Americans and youth voters and to encourage greater turnout at the polls,” said Kirk Clay, Sr., NAACP Director of Civic Engagement.
According to the United States Census Bureau, only sixty-nine percent of African Americans are registered compared to seventy-five percent of non-Hispanic whites. In 2004, four-fifths of all registration happened in the last three months of registration and two-thirds of people who downloaded the online registration forms actually mail them in. “We’re encouraging all our community partners and anyone interested in uplifting the voices of the underrepresented to utilize these resources,” said Clay.
Individuals interested in registering can visit http://www.naacp.org/ to complete, print and mail the registration form before the October 4th deadline. Corporate and community partners interested in offering the online registration widget to their site can download it from http://www.naacp.org/.

The primary purpose of MWPC parallels that of NWPC - increasing the number of elected and appointed women in office. This has been done by targeting, endorsing, contributing funds and volunteers, working to publicize women's campaigns, and encouraging members to serve on campaign committees. The screening, endorsement and funding of candidates is carried out by a separate Political Action Committee (PAC).
MWPC also lobbies on issues of concern to women, and provides a variety of programs for the purpose of informing and energizing its membership. It also pubishes a quarterly newsletter, Caucus Times. Since 1979, MWPC has maintained an office with part-time staff. It was a founding member of the Minnesota Women's Consortium, where it continues to be a political resource and supporter of Consortium activities such as its annual Women and Girls Come to the Capitol.

Project Homeless Connect - 4/28 Commit NOW
As we all know, African Americans and in particular African American men represent a disproportionate percentage of the homeless population both here the twin cites and in the country. Please make a commitment to volunteer and pass this information on to others.

Project Homeless Connect

At Project Homeless Connect on October 1, 2007, 1,780 individuals were assisted by nearly 800 volunteers in accessing services at the Minneapolis Convention Center. This is a 46% increase in the number of guests from the previous event - 801 housing services were provided including triage, housing applications, referrals, and placement on waiting lists, 136 people received a free health assessment followed by onsite healthcare, 60 received dental care, 475 got vouchers for shoes, 142 adults and children enrolled in educational programs in Minneapolis public schools, 211 accessed legal services, 177 used the employment services, 155 got help with veterans' services, Social Security, and community action agencies, 115 were given information or referrals in the children and families area and nearly 300 received haircuts.

Project Homeless Connect
is a one-stop shop model for delivering services to people experiencing homelessness.
At Project Homeless Connect on October 1, 2007, 1,780 individuals were assisted by nearly 800 volunteers in accessing services at the Minneapolis Convention Center. This is a 46% increase in the number of guests from the previous event - 801 housing services were provided including triage, housing applications, referrals, and placement on waiting lists, 136 people received a free health assessment followed by onsite healthcare, 60 received dental care, 475 got vouchers for shoes, 142 adults and children enrolled in educational programs in Minneapolis public schools, 211 accessed legal services, 177 used the employment services, 155 got help with veterans' services, Social Security, and community action agencies, 115 were given information or referrals in the children and families area and nearly 300 received haircuts.
1000 volunteers needed for Monday, April 28
My reason for writing today is to ask you to help at the April 28 event. The Convention Center space will be set up with many tables, rooms, and areas for the various services available and volunteers will assist the guests in connecting with the services they need or request. With about 2000 participants expected for this event, we need at least 1000 volunteers to make the day successful.
Volunteer shifts
The April event will start at 10:30 a.m. and end at 5:00 p.m. with two shifts for volunteers:
(1) 9:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. and
(2) 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
All volunteers are asked to arrive by 9:00 a.m.
Volunteer training
Cathy ten Broeke, the project director, will orient the volunteers and answer questions. Training is required for everyone except those who trained and volunteered for the October 2007 event. Training in April is strongly recommended for all volunteers, however, to make the volunteer experience better and to offer the best service to the guests. Training sessions are scheduled for:

D. Tuesday, April 22, 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., Central Lutheran Church, 333 S. 12th Street, Minneapolis, 55404
E. Friday, April 25, 10:00 - 11:30 a.m., Ridgedale Public Library, 12601 Ridgedale Drive, Minnetonka, 55305
F. Saturday, April 26, 2:00 -3:30 p.m., Christ Presbyterian Church, 6901 Normandale Road, Edina, 55435

For the April 28 Homeless Connect, the only donations being accepted are bus cards or cash contributions. Clothing or any other goods will not be accepted for the April 28 Homeless Connect.
