Volunteers needed to help protect children, improve system

Now is the time for residents of Hennepin County to play an integral role in helping protect children from abuse and neglect. Hennepin County and the Minnesota Department of Human Services (DHS) are seeking community members for a Child Protection Citizen Review Panel to offer input on how the state and the County can improve Minnesota's child protection system.

Residents of Hennepin County can offer their insights on how to work together in government, communities, and families to better serve children in the child protection system and to help children remain safe and grow up in loving, nurturing families.

Consisting of 11-15 members, Hennepin County’s Citizen Review Panel will include men and women with a variety of experiences and backgrounds. People representative of the County’s population are encouraged to apply. Panel members will:

1. Offer an outside perspective on the internal workings of the child protection system.
2. Offer suggestions for the state and County to better safeguard children who have been abused or neglected.
3. Provide ideas on ways families and communities can work together to better serve children.

Volunteers will meet regularly, gather information through reports and interviews, and may analyze trends and data, study Hennepin County’s performance, review case files, and make recommendations to key leaders in the child protection system. The Department of Human Services and the County will consult with and provide ongoing support to Citizen Review Panel members.

The Hennepin County Board of Commissioners will recommend members to be appointed by the Commissioner of DHS. Volunteers serve a two-year term (with some initial terms of three years for continuity), up to six years, or three terms maximum. These are unpaid positions.

Some out-of-pocket expenses incurred by volunteers that may be reimbursed are:
Child care of up to $50 per month
Mileage
Parking
Bus fare
Long-distance phone calls
Postage

A panel member may not be a current employee of the Hennepin County attorney's office, district court, social services, or court services; a foster care provider; or a paid guardian ad litem in Hennepin County.

Volunteer applicants will need to consent to criminal and maltreatment background checks.

Hennepin County is looking for volunteers who listen well, work as part of a team, and show sensitivity to children's diverse social, cultural, and economic needs. This is a great opportunity to truly make a difference in children's lives.

Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is accepting applications for the NCE Commission

The Minneapolis Park and Recreation Board (MPRB) is accepting applications from residents for one position on the newly created Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission.

The role of the commission will be to shape how the City engages its residents and works with neighborhood and community organizations, as well as oversee programming details and funding for neighborhood revitalization work. The resident who will be appointed by the MPRB on January 2, 2009 will be part of the 16-member commission. Of the remaining members, eight residents will be selected by neighborhood organizations and seven will be appointed by the Mayor and Council Members of Minneapolis.

The application deadline for the MPRB appointed commission position is December 19, 2008. Applicants are required to be Minneapolis residents who do not hold a current election certificate. FREEZING FORECLOSURES BEFORE THEY FREEZE US!

NCRC volunteers have identified over 500 North Minneapolis residents who received adjustable rate mortgages (ARMs) in 2007 or are currently delinquent on their mortgage payments. On Monday December 1^st- Thursday December 4^th from 5pm-7pm we will be going out in groups of 2 to visit these residents to make sure they know they may be able to get a loan modification by working with a foreclosure prevention counselor at one of several local agencies. The counseling is free of charge.

We need volunteers to visit these neighbors and protect our community's wealth from predatory lenders and foreclosure! There will be a brief training, as well as t-shirts and free food afterwards for all volunteers. st Century Community

Learning Centers (21

st CCLC) –Cohort 4 grant competition. Approximately $3 million is

available to establish or expand high-quality afterschool programs that offer a broad array of

services and activities designed to reinforce and complement the regular academic program of

participating students before and after school, on school release days, weekends and school

vacation periods.

Examples of agencies and organizations eligible to apply for a 21st CCLC grant include, but are

not limited to: schools, school districts, non-profit agencies, city or county government agencies,

faith-based organizations, institutions of higher education and for-profit corporations.

Eligible applications must include a collaborative between a school or school district, and one or

more community-based organizations, faith based organizations or other public or private

entities. Applicants must primarily serve youth who attend high poverty schools or schools

eligible for Title I schoolwide programs.

I am sending this out to my closest friends and collegues in the hope that you will be able to assist me. As you may or may not know, I am on the board of directors for the Center for Communication and Development / KMOJ radio.

We are going to be having a Radio A Thon next week, Sunday October 26 through November 1. We are in need of volunteers to help answer phones and take pledges at the office of KMOJ (1422 Lake Street) from AM to 8 PM starting on Monday morning. We would hope you could at least take an hour time slot but would welcome more.

Please let me know if you would be willing to take some time to help out KMOJ. If you are like me, you may have grown up listening to KMOJ when it was the only urban radio station in Minneapolis. At times for me, it was my connection to the community. Now it is our time to give back to what this station has given to us. We have a lot of great things planned for KMOJ in the coming few years and I would love for you to be a part of it.

Applications for 7 new members for the Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission

The City of Minneapolis is now accepting applications from residents for seven positions on the newly created Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission.

The role of the commission will be to shape how the City engages its residents and works with neighborhood and community organizations, as well as oversee programming details and funding for neighborhood revitalization work.

The application deadline for these seven positions is Nov. 19, 2008.

The Neighborhood and Community Engagement Commission was created by the Mayor and City Council in late September. It is designed as one measure to strengthen the relationship between the City and its neighborhoods and carry on the work of the Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) beyond 2009. Because the state legislation that funded NRP sunsets in 2009, City leaders have been working since 2006 to improve the City’s community engagement system and to find ways to make sure neighborhoods remain a valued part of the City’s culture, serving as a link between City government, residents and businesses. That work has centered around creating a community engagement system that allows City government and neighborhoods to work more closely together, while being more accountable and transparent to taxpayers.

New NAACP Leader Kicks-Off Tenure Registering Every Last Voter

BALTIMORE, MD ––While most kids were home playing Nintendo, 14-year old Benjamin Todd Jealous and his friends were out commanding card tables and conducting voter registration drives. After registering thousands of new voters, Jealous realized the power of community organizing. Now, twenty–one years later, he is combining his organizing skills -- honed as a youth by the NAACP -- with emerging technologies to transform the organization that he now leads. As the youngest President in the NAACP’s nearly 100-year history, and a fifth-generation NAACP member, Jealous starts his tenure doing what he does best. Getting people involved. “As an organization, our goal is to make the promise of this country real for all families,” said Jealous, “and this starts with making all Americans regular voters.

While unprecedented numbers of African Americans and young people are expected to register in this year’s election, Jealous’ aspirations are higher. “The NAACP has had a history of transforming this country and in that tradition, we will transform the electoral process. We can do it by registering every last voter, verifying every last voter, mobilizing every last voter, protecting every last voter and ensuring that every last vote is counted,” said Jealous.

This week, Jealous started his first day on the job rolling out a new online voter registration initiative, Upload to Uplift. This initiative uses Web 2.0 technology to encourage visitors to register and upload the email addresses of family and friends that are not registered. Upload to Uplift also uses a text message feature to remind registered voters to go to the polls on Election Day. “Online voter registration is a natural extension of the NAACP voter empowerment programs,” said Jealous. “While we will continue to do employ successful strategies, like door-to-door canvassing and phone banking, however, this tool adds the power of viral voter registration to our mix.” he added.

Many of the 1200 active NAACP units have tested the site anticipating its ability to expand their existing voter registration efforts. “Our branches and our Youth and College units, are excited about using this emerging technology to reach a new and very active core of activists – both online and offline, said Nelson B. Rivers III, Chief of NAACP Field Operations.

The NAACP is calling on all corporate, community partners, bloggers and individuals with web sites to download the widget onto their Web sites. “By making the tool available to partners to place on their sites, the NAACP aims to reach the millions of remaining unregistered African Americans and youth voters and to encourage greater turnout at the polls,” said Kirk Clay, Sr., NAACP Director of Civic Engagement.

According to the United States Census Bureau, only sixty-nine percent of African Americans are registered compared to seventy-five percent of non-Hispanic whites. In 2004, four-fifths of all registration happened in the last three months of registration and two-thirds of people who downloaded the online registration forms actually mail them in. “We’re encouraging all our community partners and anyone interested in uplifting the voices of the underrepresented to utilize these resources,” said Clay.

MWPC also lobbies on issues of concern to women, and provides a variety of programs for the purpose of informing and energizing its membership. It also pubishes a quarterly newsletter, Caucus Times. Since 1979, MWPC has maintained an office with part-time staff. It was a founding member of the Minnesota Women's Consortium, where it continues to be a political resource and supporter of Consortium activities such as its annual Women and Girls Come to the Capitol.

The Board of Directors exists to fulfil the organizational mission and serve the membership of the MPWC and MWPC Education Council. The Board of Directors develops the annual business plan and approves the operating budget. The Board also works to satisfy the long-range strategic plan, recieves committee reports, participates in board recruitment, election of board leadership, supporting and working with the Executive Director and approves policies and procedures for the MWPC.

• You can register to vote on the same day as the election. Before you can vote, you must register. In Minnesota, you may register before Election Day or on Election Day at your polling place. Your registration remains current until you move, change your name, or do not vote for four consecutive years. NOTE: you are required to provide proof of residence when registering on Election Day. • If you have a question, ask an election judge. The job of an election judge (also known as a poll worker) is to help with the voting process. • Call the experts for assistance. There are voting hotlines to assist those who feel their rights are being violated or need help with the voting process. • Assistance for persons with disabilities. All polling places in Minnesota are equipped with voting systems that allow people with disabilities to vote privately and independently. Polling places are fully accessible with clearly marked parking spaces, doors and routes to the area of the building used for voting. You may choose to bring someone with you to assist with reading and/or marking your ballot. Also, as part of their duties on Election Day, election judges are available at the polling place for assistance if needed. If you are unable to leave your car to enter the polling place, election judges will bring a ballot and any registration materials to you in the vehicle if asked. This voting process is called "curbside voting."
