Job: Information & Referral Specialists - United Way

Information & Referral Specialists
(Part-time Approx. 30 hours per week)Hours: Monday – Friday 12:30-6:30p.m.

Greater Twin Cities United Way unites caring people in building stronger communities by inspiring people to help others, increasing resources to meet needs and fostering innovative solutions to problems. This part-time position is located in downtown St. Paul and is responsible for answering incoming phone calls, assessing the caller’s situation and referring them to the appropriate community resources.

Description of Duties
• Interviews callers to determine their service need and refers them to appropriate community resources.
• Accountable for the individual and team performance standards required by AIRS (Alliance of Information & Referral Specialist) and United Way, including expectations for quantity and quality of calls answered.
• Recommends limited financial assistance in accordance with policy guidelines.
• Maintains a current knowledge of community resources and professional expectations
• Quickly make decisions and judgment calls in emergencies and crisis.
• Continuously learn all aspects of United Way business and service in order to respond to policy and operations questions.
• Discreetly handle sensitive and confidential requests from Donor Relations staff and the executive Leadership team re: individual cases at companies.
• Tracks calls and documents information within the database.

Specifications
• BA degree in human services, related field, or equivalent years experience. Knowledge of the social work field preferred.
• One-to-one interviewing and assessment skills.
• Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with an ability to put concerned individuals at ease quickly and problem solve.
• Ability to make judgments and provide callers with appropriate resources in a short time period or a crisis situation.
• Will be required to work other than scheduled hours, during a local or national disaster.
• Ability to handle conflict.
• Ability to search the Internet and the custom software competently, and excellent PC skills with Outlook e-mail, calendar, Word and Excel. Good typing skills required.
• Knowledge of metro area community organizations and services
• Excellent organizational and problem solving skills.
• Fluency in English and Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali or other languages a plus
